Peat litter is unique due to its antiseptic properties. Peat contains substances that inhibit the development of fungi and rotting bacteria, which helps birds to protect themselves from rotting organisms and inhibits the development of harmful micro-organisms;
Air-dry peat litter absorbs up to 5 kg of moisture per kg of litter. Poultry farmers have observed that during the initial 3 days of incubation, the loss of birds kept on peat is less than 1.5%, while on straw the loss is up to 5%. Peat is better than other types of litter at absorbing odours, trapping ammonia and attenuating bird noise.
The blend of bird droppings and peat litter is highly compostable and makes an ideal fertiliser for different soil types.
