The main characteristic of black peat is that it is a highly decomposed peat (von Post H6-H7), so it will not decompose further during the plant growing process. Substrates with a high percentage of black peat are very stable. Black peat is also used to make substrates denser, giving them a firmer structure, Black peat has a high nutrient buffer capacity and can hold water for a long time. Black peat can contain many natural soil improvers such as humus, which is often referred to as peat humus.
