Natural highmoor peat is widely used in horticulture, floriculture, gardening and animal husbandry.

JSC “Durpeta” operates 4 peatbogs where peat is high-marshy (covers part of Šepeta peatbogs, Tyre­lis, Kalniškiai peatbogs) and low-marshy type (covers Pabalvė, Lebeliai, Aklaežeris and a part of Šepeta peat­bogs);

The substances in the peat litter mixture and the lower pH (about 4-4.8) inhibit the development of fungi and putrefactive bacteria, therefore the body of animals and birds littered with the peat mixture is better protected against rot and harmful microorganisms, especially aspergellosis;
